The Hershel Lisker Bikur Cholim is a non-profit organization established in 1976 by the late Lisker Rebbe, Rav Shlomo Friedlander. When observant men and women needed to stay on the Upper East Side of Manhattan over the Sabbath or Holidays to be with their loved ones in the hospital, they found a haven where they could rest their heads, have a meal, a listening ear, and a sympathetic heart. The Lisker Rebbe expressly moved his Congregation from the Bronx to the Upper East Side because he believed he would be of the greatest use there to his fellow men and women.
Rav Shlomo Friedlander left a great imprint on the Upper East Side through his warmth and generosity. He transformed his vision of Bikur Cholim simply by setting an example and by inviting all those who needed it. The mitzvah of Bikur Cholim was then introduced to the Upper East Side.
The legacy of this mitzvah was left to his daughter, Rebbetzin Judith Friedlander, and subsequently to his grandson, Rav Zvi-Hersh Friedlander. They have perpetuated and supplemented the Rebbe's endeavors. They opened their doors wider than ever before to welcome all those who had never crossed the portals of a synagogue. Most importantly, they have been reserving places for those who wish to tend to their relatives ensconced in neighboring hospitals on the Sabbath and Holidays. _ continue >>
